Saffron— an expensive commodity?

Many people who have either brought in or taken animals from our Shelter, know that Animals at Risk Shelter has a policy of never giving up on an animal unless the quality of life has gone, also that we never refuse any animal needing our help. This was the case with the young couple, Susan and Jon, who brought in a black cat that we have named Saffron, who was dragging himself along the pavement. Knowing of our policy, they brought him to our Shelter. After being x-rayed at our vets, Saffron was found to have many broken bones in his legs and immediately went through a lengthy operation.

Our vet, who has been in practice for many years, said he had never seen broken legs such as Saffron’s and in his opinion, it wasn’t an accident as first thought but a deliberate act, either by being kicked or hit with a heavy object. It’s a miracle that none of Saffron’s internal organs or spine were damaged. Saffron’s plight didn’t end there, as his first operation went pear-shaped. He was referred to Davis White veterinary specialists for an orthopaedic surgeon to carry out two more lengthy operations, fixing allsorts of external ironmongery, to keep his bones together.

During the time of pain and suffering that Saffron went through, he has been a gentle, loving and trusting creature, who didn’t deserve this inhumane treatment from a heartless individual. We have called this person some choice names but nothing we could possibly print. We would like to thank all those who were concerned about Saffron and who sent get-well cards, letters and donations, towards his hefty vet bill, which so far is £2,300. This will go higher as he has other treatment to undergo.
